What a thrill it is to see Cool Million come so far since my first encounter with them in 2007. They began at Expansion Records with ”Naughty Girl” for ’Soul Togetherness’ just ahead of their debut album for the label ”Going Out Tonight”. They are routed in a musical genre of soul we lost by the end of the 1980s and reinvigorated it with their own sound and featured singers from today and the original era of great soul and boogie.
Their formula is a success and continues to evolve and inspire. It’s been a decade since ”Back For More” with Eugene Wlde while in between times they brought their brand to new music for Glenn Jones, Peggi Blu, Tim Owens, C. Robert Walker, Laura Jackson, Natasha Watts to name a few. Their music is never far from dance floors on what is referred to as the ’modern soul’ scene, while the legendary Tom Moulton took their music further still with a complete album of remixes for a disco audience.
So now the new album is here and they are stronger than ever. The credits alone impress from the start with James ’D-Train’ Willams feature on lead vocals for the title song. In fact the singers across the whole album set the highest standard whether they be those establishing themselves independently right now or starting out here with Rob and Frank. Musically this is an exciting journey too.
They are back for more and as Keni Burke sang on their collaboration ”So Real”, they’re one in a million.
